Founded in 1937, the mission of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit (JCRC) is to represent the metropolitan Detroit Jewish community, Israel and Jews throughout the world to the general community, and to establish collaborative relationships with other ethnic, racial, civic and religious groups. The organization educates and advocates on important issues, seeking consensus with a commitment to Jewish values.

In 2016, JCRC established a partnership with AJC - the global Jewish advocacy organization - in order to better serve the Detroit Jewish community. AJC’s mission is to enhance the wellbeing of the Jewish people and to advance human rights and democratic values for all.

JCRC/AJC is the leading community relations and Jewish advocacy organization in Metro Detroit. It is an independent, non-profit organization that is a constituent agency of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the regional representative of AJC, and a member of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs.

The Assistant Director will be a highly motivated self-starter who will be assigned projects in the area of Israel advocacy, government and community relations, communications, and lay-leadership engagement. In addition, the Assistant Director will support other projects on an as-needed basis, either acting as the point person or in a collaborative manner with other professional staff.

Responsibilities may include:
● Champion Israel advocacy initiatives for multiple audiences (within and outside of Jewish community) working in partnership with lay committee community stakeholders and leveraging national resources
● Facilitate government relations initiatives at State and Federal levels. Engage elected officials, and legislative staffers, in the advancement of JCRC/AJC priorities (priorities are set in consultation with lay committee). This includes strategically seeking out meetings with officials, preparing participants for meetings, follow-up with legislative offices, coordinating with national advocacy colleagues, and tracking relevant developments in government
● Manage digital identity of the organization - website, social media activity, and mass email communications
● Plan board meetings (about six per year) – develop the educational/discussion component, coordinate with speaker, prepare for policy discussions as needed
● Serve as an ambassador for the organization in diverse settings -- within and outside of the Jewish community (e.g., interfaith coalition, university advisory committee, Yom Hazikaron community event committee)
● Participate in development of public statements and press releases
sometimes for quick turnaround
● Staff nominating committee, a lay committee which appoints future members
to the board

Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree required
● Minimum 3 years relevant professional experience
● Commitment to JCRC/AJC’s mission and priority advocacy issues
● Strong organizational and time management skills
● Excellent written and verbal communications skills
● Ability to solve problems creatively, diplomatically, and pragmatically within
the organization and in the community
● Ability to multi-task, including working on many projects simultaneously
● Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with staff and lay
leadership
● Ability to work effectively under pressure, make tough decisions and follow
through on agreed upon initiatives
● An entrepreneurial mindset; able to identify and pursue opportunities
● Excellent project management skills, ability to manage data and develop,
implement and oversee program budget
● Respect for and adherence to confidentiality
● Availability for early morning, evening and weekend meetings, and
occasional travel.
● Familiarity with the Detroit Jewish community is preferred
